What the EPA Is Proposing

How DEF Derates Work Right Now

Industry Reaction Has Been Mixed

Not everyone sees this the same way. The American Trucking Associations has generally welcomed the proposal’s direction. The group points out that heavy-duty emissions have already dropped sharply since 1970.

Fuel marketers and truck stop groups see it differently. They’ve raised concerns about pulling back DEF-related requirements too fast. Their worry is that it could disrupt the DEF supply market built up around current rules.

Both sides agree on one thing, though. DEF technology itself isn’t going anywhere. Trucks will still need it to meet emissions standards.

DEF is still required for 2026 model year trucks. It will still be required for 2027 and later models too, if this proposal is finalized as written.
